The Real 80s BBC Radio 2
2003.07.29 - e01 - The Real 80s [128-44-js] 20:30 The Real 80s 1/4. We Are The World
The Real 80s is a new four-part series taking an incisive and insightful look at the decade that brought us Thatcherism, Perestroika, Live Aid, The Brat Pack, the mobile phone and the mullet!
Featuring interviews with key movers and shakers from the era, nuggets from the BBC archive and music you thought you'd forgotten it will give the ultimate flavour of the decade that spawned the 'me' generation.
This programme explores the political and social events that shaped the 80s. It all began with the inauguration of Ronald Reagan who went on to govern the world's greatest super power for most of the coming decade and his relationship with Margaret Thatcher was to become one of the closest 'special relationships' ever between the two countries.
With a closer look at Gorbachev and 'Glasnost', AIDS, the miner's strike, denationalisation and the Big Bang, the wedding of Charles and Diana, the Brixton and Toxteth Riots, Live Aid, Spitting Image and the Falklands conflict.
In sport, the 80s were more about just competition. It was a decade that included boycotts and sanctions as well as sporting tragedies including Bradford, Hillsborough and Heysel. Plus the five year ban of English clubs from European competition and Maradona's 'hand of God', plus the London Marathon was launched, there was Botham's Ashes and the superb tennis skills of Bjorn Borg and John 'Superbrat' McEnroe.
Includes contributions from Margaret Thatcher, Mikhail Gorbachev, Nelson Mandela, Ronald Reagan, Bob Geldof, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Fluck & Law, Arthur Scargill, Frank Bough, John McEnroe and others.
Music includes Band Aid, UB40, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Billy Bragg.
2003.08.05 - e02 - The Real 80s [128-44-js] 20:30 The Real 80s This programme revisits the TV and films that defined the Real 80s.
We'll look at the birth of ground-breaking TV series and events like the launch of Channel 4 and TV-AM, the beginnings of Eastenders and Brookside, Live Aid, The Tube, satellite telly and MTV.
We'll chart the rise of great British comedies like Only Fools And Horses, The Young Ones, Hi De Hi, Yes, Prime Minister, Allo Allo, and Blackadder. Plus, we'll hear from the 'new' wave of alternative comedians like Ben Elton, Rik Mayall and Dawn French.
We'll talk to the stars of Dynasty and Dallas, the smash hit American series that defined the decade of the padded shoulders.Meanwhile, Down Under, Neighbours turned a legion of C-list Australian actors into B-list British celebrities.
This was the decade of the high concept blockbuster with slick MTV influenced films like Top Gun, Flashdance, Back To The Future and Beverly Hills Cop. The big names to splurge onto the mainstream included Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruise, Melanie Griffiths, Stephen Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Drew Barrymore, Sigourney Weaver, Michael Douglas, Patrick Swayze, Kevin Costner and the legendary Brat Pack (Charlie Sheen, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, and Demi Moore).
Music includes Queen, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, Berlin, Madonna, Bananarama, Madness, David Bowie, Huey Lewis And The News, Kylie And Jason, Spandau Ballet and Anita Dobson.

1/4. Jack the Ripper Londoners were certainly afraid in the late 1880s, but not, as we might expect, of a top-hat wearing, knife-wielding psychopath. Michael travels from the East to the West End of the city to reveal that the fear that stalked those streets was not down to one man, but to the catastrophic collapse of a whole way of life. Things We Forgot to Remember - s02e02 - First World War - 2007.04.22 [192-44-S] 13:30 Things We Forgot to Remember Michael Portillo presents a series revisiting the great moments of history to discover that they often conceal other events of equal but forgotten importance. 2/4. First World War The popular memory of the First World War is of mud, blood and futility. But there are less familiar memories of the war, accounts of military success, the liberation of occupied towns and the pride of ordinary soldiers. Michael tells the story of battles fought in the last 100 days of the war and explores how British forces progressed from the slaughter of the Somme to the forgotten victories of 1918. Things We Forgot to Remember - s02e03 - Magna Carta - 2007.04.29 [192-44-S] 13:30 Things We Forgot to Remember Michael Portillo presents a series revisiting the great moments of history to discover that they often conceal other events of equal but forgotten importance. 3/4. Magna Carta Nearly 800 years after it was signed, Magna Carta is still venerated as the bedrock of English justice and liberty. Yet its impact was a good deal less far-reaching than is popularly believed. Another document, signed two years after Magna Carta, was the true charter for the common man. Things We Forgot to Remember - s02e04 - The 1945 Labour Government - 2007.05.06 [192-44-S] 13:30 Things We Forgot to Remember Michael Portillo presents a series revisiting the great moments of history to discover that they often conceal other events of equal but forgotten importance. 4/4. The 1945 Labour Government Clement Attlee's administration is now remembered as the founder of the welfare state, but just how radical was this agenda and how much of this memory is a myth promoted by subsequent Labour governments? Michael remembers the pragmatism, the compromises and the in-fighting while Denis Healey, Peter Carrington and Tony Benn recall the forgotten choices made in a Britain exhausted by one war and on the brink of another.

On Suffragettes Suffragettes are now remembered as the acceptable face of direct action, but parts of the movement's history have been conveniently forgotten, including a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Herbert Asquith in 1909 and a series of arson attacks. Things We Forgot to Remember - s03e02 - The Darien Gap - 2007.12.31 [192-44-S] 20:00 Things We Forgot to Remember Michael Portillo presents a series revisiting the great moments of history to discover that they often conceal other events of equal but forgotten importance. 2/4. The Darien Gap
The real reason behind the 1707 Act of Union which saw England and Scotland merged was a disastrous colonial expedition. But why did a small settlement in what is now Panama bring a nation to its knees and why it has been reduced to such a tiny footnote in the story? Things We Forgot to Remember - s03e03 - The Bengal Famine - 2008.01.07 [192-44-S] 20:00 Things We Forgot to Remember Michael Portillo presents a series revisiting the great moments of history to discover that they often conceal other events of equal but forgotten importance. 3/4. The Bengal Famine One of the worst catastrophes ever to occur under British rule, the Bengal famine of 1943 cost, at the most conservative of British estimates, one and a half million lives. Michael challenges our collective amnesia and asks historians from both India and Britain whether it could have been avoided. The Battle of Trafalgar Nelson's victory of 1805 has lodged itself firmly in the popular imagination, but we have forgotten that the brunt of the defeat was borne not by France but by one of her allies, Spain. |
